Time the contractions
Tap when a contraction starts and when it ends: you see how long each lasts and how far apart they are. Québec public health’s general rule, for a first birth: go when regular contractions come every 5 minutes or less for 1 hour; other births: every 5 minutes or less; more than 30 minutes away: every 10 minutes. Your care team may tell you otherwise.
Go now, or call, if
- your waters break
- you are bleeding
- your baby is moving less, or you no longer feel them move
In an emergency, call 911 (in Nunavut, your community health centre).
